About me

Originally from the UK, I moved to Portugal in 2006, spent seven years in Berlin from 2013, and have been back in Portugal with my family since 2020. I'm a tinkerer, a sometime creative and a software engineer, turning ideas into symbols since 2004: senior, principal and CTO roles at startups and scale-ups, mostly in Clojure and Datomic these days. Currently building AI-powered features for Catermonkey and data-heavy side projects with ML and LLMs in the loop.

Values

Some principles that are usually rattling around in my head, with a tip of the hat to the thinkers who put them out there in the first place.

Simple systems are resilient systems.
There is no technology that will save you if you don't know what you are building, or why.
As much complexity as you need, and no more.
The best present you can give to people who care is ownership of their work.

Projects

octoberA GraphQL backend generated from one schema on Datomic, where every write records who made it
FarolA personal search engine for European Portuguese: Clojure, Datomic and Lucene, with a language classifier
EPLFine-tuning EuroLLM-1.7B into a European Portuguese chat assistant, with paired evals

Earlier: Pour, declarative UI and function composition with EQL and Datomic; Sidesketch, a palette builder and colour explorer; and creative-coding sketches on CodePen.
